MCELROY ARCHITECTURE

Castro House

The existing house had a compartmentalized plan with very small openings between each room. The owners wanted an open space to hang out with friends and see each other from different areas.  We removed walls to combine living, dining and kitchen functions. Custom elements allow the open plan to shift: a bi-fold cabinet door conceals a TV, a large sliding door reveals a bar, a fireplace is visible from two directions. Varying ceiling heights, a built-in bench, and windows help define the rooms within the larger room. The project also included two new bedrooms and a bathroom within an unfinished basement space below.
